|
| 1. Operates a multimedia computer and
peripherals to install and use a variety of software. |
This most basic of indicators will be amply
illustrated below. |
| 2. Uses terminology related to
computers and technology appropriately in written and verbal
communication |
This indicator is best illustrated by my technology
resource teacher website, which includes information on a wide range
of technologies including digital video, imaging, music, electronic
display, and online
communication. |
| 3. Demonstrates knowledge of the use of
technology in business, industry, and society. |
I have attempted to demonstrate this standard
through a series of editorials in TIPS:
|
| 4. Demonstrates basic knowledge of
computer/peripheral parts and attends to simple connections and
installations. |
I built the computer on which I am currently
composing this document. In addition, my home has a simple
router/firewall computer network with wireless access capability
which I hand-wired and configured. I also constructed this
analysis of the Fayette County WAN and Ambrose LAN. |
| 5. Creates multimedia presentations
using scanners, digital cameras, and video cameras. |
As an example, I created this
example of event-driven video streaming instruction - I
videotaped, edited, web-coded and formatted it in is entirety (the
video streams often do not work outside of the KDE backbone). I have
been the district's primary professional development trainer for
digital video editing (I have done workshops on this two years
running at the Kentucky Teaching and Learning Conference),
and have taught many multimedia and music professional development
classes. |
| 6. Uses the computer to do word
processing, create databases and spreadsheets, access electronic
mail and the Internet, make presentations, and use other emerging
technologies to enhance professional productivity and support
instruction. |
I have extensive experience with all these
capabilities. Since beginning the degree program, I have added
extensive Access database experience associated with the Fayette County
District Technology Assessment (still in press - a partial analysis
can be found in this Technology Plan Assessment). |
| 7. Uses computers and other
technologies such as interactive instruction, audio/video
conferencing, and other distance learning applications to enhance
professional productivity and support instruction. |
As coordinator of the Fayette County Video-Linked
Classroom (discussed in the Connections
section of September, 2002 TIPS), I have selected
video-conferencing hardware and trained for its use. I also
designed, installed, implemented, and support the Fayette
County Online Forums. |
| 8.Requests and uses appropriate
assistive and adaptive devices for students with special needs. |
As school technology coordinator for Bryan Station
High, I coordinated the purchase, configuring, and implementation of
assistive technology, including touch screens and switches, screen
readers, and other technologies. Since joining the district
technology office, my association with this capability remains
indirect. I added the Assistive Technology page to TIPS beginning
with the December,
2001 issue of TIPS. |
| 9. Designs lessons that use technology
to address diverse student needs and learning styles. |
I have assisted teachers in the use of
student-generated project learning through multimedia which address
this - primarily through the Fayette County Pet
Project program - specifically
Civil Rights after MLK and RFK, a
high school social studies unit on civil rights. I also
supported the multimedia Iditarod Project with Henry Clay special
education teacher Linda Victor.
|
| 10. Practices equitable and legal use
of computers and technology in professional activities. |
This indicator cannot be adequately illustrated by
examples, since it is the absence rather than the
presence of behaviors which this indicator demands. I am committed
to equitable use of technology for students. As an example, the Fayette
County Video-Linked Classroom is an attempt to provide AP and
elective courses at schools where they have traditionally had
insufficient enrollment to justify staffing. This belief in
equitable use is present in my own practices. My relationship with
legal use of computers might be illustrated by my
promotion of copyright sensitivity, and the correct application of
"Fair Use."
|
| 11. Facilitates the lifelong learning
of self and others through the use of technology. |
This is best exemplified by my current status as
moderator of the educational technology LISTSERV EDTECH
- a moderated email discussion forum with over 3,000 members and
volume varying from 10 to 80 messages daily. I also piloted email
discussion within our district, and researched its effectiveness. |
| 12. Explores, uses, and evaluates
technology resources: software, applications, and related
documentation. |
The best example of this is
The E-Line, an email newsletter I
produce.
In almost every issue I review Web resources and software.
|
| 13. Applies research-based
instructional practices that use computers and other technology. |
I have improved in this area, illustrated by
Electronic Mail Discussion as a
Technology Integration Resource, a research document of email discussion lists in Fayette County,
as well as The Efficacy of Video-Linked
High School Classrooms in Fayette County Public Schools (both are in PDF format).
|
| 14. Uses computers and other technology
for individual, small group, and large group learning activities. |
As mentioned in Performance Indicator 9 above, an example of this might be
Civil Rights after MLK and RFK, a
high school social studies unit on civil rights developed as a
PET Project.
Another illustration of this is the
Fayette
County Schools Forums, which serve as a platform for a wide
range of instructional practices, including journaling, peer review
writing, and group or class discussion.
|
| 15. Uses technology to support multiple
assessments of student learning. |
My involvement in
IMMEX has
provided a platform by which students can improve their
problem-solving skills as well as content area knowledge. IMMEX
provides a variety of assessment formats, including knowledge
mastery, strategy mapping, and time. I am also involved in the Fayette County District Technology
Assessment, though it's relationship to student
assessment is tangential at best.
|
| 16. Instructs and supervises students
in the ethical and legal use of technology. |
I was the developer of the Bryan Station High
School Acceptable Use Policy, which placed ordinary computer use
outside of its purveyance for the first time in Fayette County (it
addressed connectivity issues only). [This document is no longer
on line.] For three years I was responsible for teaching ethical
and legal technology use to the entire student population of Bryan
Station High, through their network and Acceptable Use Policy
orientation classes each fall.
